Invictus Games Legacy Program

About

Extending the 2025 Invictus Games impact by investing in programs to foster well-being, purpose and identity for the military and Veteran family community.

In a first for the Invictus Games, True Patriot Love initiated the Invictus Games Legacy Fund to invest in targeted areas of impact up to, during and beyond the 2025 Games.

The Legacy Program is advancing Veteran well-being, including meaningful engagement and support for Indigenous Veterans, and empowering the rehabilitation and recovery of Veterans through the unifying power of sport and community. At its heart, this program champions identity, innovation, accessibility and sustainability, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

Team Canada

The Legacy Fund supports Team Canada’s continued recruitment, training and participation in international competitions such as the Invictus and the Warrior Games. The team consists of both serving members and Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces, who acquired a physical or mental injury or illness while serving their nation.

Veteran Employment: Ecosystem Connect

The Legacy Fund continues to advance knowledge and systems change through our national Employment Ecosystem Connect series. These convenings take place across Canada, bringing together Veterans, employers, industry leaders, and government partners.

Adaptive Sports Fund

By addressing challenges related to accessibility, Veteran participation and equipment availability, the Adaptive Sports Fund enables Veterans to engage in adaptive sports year-round by funding programs across Canada.

Veteran Volunteerism Initiative

The Legacy Fund also supported True Patriot Love’s Veteran Volunteerism Initiative (VVI) which worked with non-profits across Canada, including the Invictus Games, to better understand the impact of volunteerism on Veteran well-being and the role of volunteerism in building stronger communities across Canada.  The 256 Veterans who volunteered at the Games also participated in an external evaluation which informs the National Veteran Volunteer Action Plan that is a key output of the VVI.

“As Founding Partner, we are so proud to have led the bid for these Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025, making Canada the first country to host the event twice and stage the first ever Winter hybrid Invictus Games. The legacy of these Games will be an increased awareness of the sacrifice our military community makes, the power of sport to inspire their recovery, and our duty to stand by them as they have stood for us."

Legacy Programs at the 2025 Games and beyond

The vision of the 2025 Invictus Games directly correlated with the Invictus Games Foundation’s pillars of work to Inspire, Improve, and Influence. This vision provided the foundation for seven innovative legacy programs initiated by True Patriot Love that will have a lasting impact not just in Canada, but around the world.

1. Hybrid Sports Format
The innovative addition of six new adaptive winter sports to the Invictus Games: Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding, Biathlon, Nordic skiing, Skeleton, and Wheelchair Curling. It is the evolution of the Games, and provides a new path on the journey of Veteran rehabilitation and recovery.

2. Year-Round Adaptive Sports
Opportunities to access adaptive sports year-round, sharing global best practice, capitalizing on the physical and psychological benefits of regular recreational activity, and providing a foundation for future winter hybrid Games.

3. Diversity and Inclusion
Advancing reconciliation and renewed relationships with Indigenous peoples. Raising awareness of Canada’s Indigenous Armed Forces and Veterans; building on wider international platforms for diversity and inclusion.

4. Adaptive Sports Research
The Vancouver Whistler 2025 hybrid winter Invictus Games offered a unique opportunity to make a further, significant contribution to the research legacy of the Invictus Games by examining the impact of an outdoor sport setting versus an indoor setting, coupled with a degree of controlled exposure to risk (adventure sports) on injured military and Veterans and their families and caregivers.

5. Environmental, Social and Governance
A commitment to ESG tracking and transformation for the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 and being accountable to measurable delivery against these goals. Establishing an ESG strategy is a step forward for the Invictus Games Foundation, providing an impactful framework for future Games.

6. Veterans’ Transition & Employment
The successful and sustainable transition into civilian employment, including Veteran work experience at the Games. Raising awareness of new employment areas for Veterans and improving transition experience with online support and mentoring.

7. Mental Health – Friends and Family Role in Recovery Support True Patriot Love and the Canadian Red Cross developed a Psychological First Aid Certification for competitors' families, alongside a bilingual schools program and on-site family support spaces during the Games

From Sea to Sea: One Volunteer's Mission to Redistribute Invictus Games Gear

After volunteering at the 2025 Invictus Games, Veteran Lori Buchart was inspired to gather and redistribute thousands of hoodies, toques, scarves, shirts, jackets, hats to individual serving military members, Veterans and their families, Veteran and military organizations, as well as schools across Canada.
